3. Differentiate between Risk Reporting and Escalation...

This is one of the key areas where project managers need to differentiate. Sometimes, a risk or issue which really needs to be ‘escalated’ is ‘reported’ and does not solicit any action. And in some cases where a risk needs to be ‘reported’ is ‘escalated’ and creates unnecessary panic!

So, what’s the difference? ‘Reporting’ is ‘keeping them informed’. ‘Escalating’ is ‘requesting an action’. Many a times, unless the risk has progressed to such an extent that you need external intervention, you just need to keep the relevant stakeholders informed. And if and when you actually need their support, it needs to be escalated. Reporting ensures that the stakeholders have the context and understanding to resolve the issue timely if an escalation happens. Both have their own place, but one in place of other would not help to serve any purpose…
